Ash Email Scam Warning
Ash Email Scam Warning
If you were unlucky enough to lose out financially during the ash cloud crisis which hit UK airspace, be diligent when reading your e-mails. A new e-mail scam has been discovered in operation, involving e-mails sent supposedly from the Civil Aviation Authority, claiming to help travellers whose flights were affected by the Icelandic volcanic ash to receive £2,000. The scam makes its money from an initial request for a ‘small administration charge’, and a representative from the genuine Civil Aviation Authority said: "I can categorically say that this e-mail has nothing to do with us. It's a scam - and we'll be asking the police to investigate." Online security firm Scam Detectives warned: “It’s a scam through and through. If you reply [to the e-mail], you'll be asked for an 'administration fee' before your payment can be released and you'll never see a penny. "If you receive an e-mail claiming to be offering you a payment to compensate you for the inconvenience of being stuck overseas, you should delete it immediately without responding."
