Google Reveals Government Requests
Worried about online privacy? Brace yourself. Google has today released details of the various requests for data and censorship made by the world’s governments, and the United Kingdom comes third overall. The search engine giant’s figures show that the UK government has made 1,166 requests, behind only the United States (on 3,580) and Brazil (on 3,663). The rankings are possibly embellished by the fact that Google are unable to provide the number of requests from China, which are regarded as state secrets. The statistics revealed do not include breakdowns of how many requests were complied with, or what specific requests were made. It was stressed by Google, however, that the vast majority of requests made were to aid legitimate criminal investigations – so you may not need to worry unless you have something to hide!
