QWERTY Keyboard Origins

Among our many services are Keyboard Replacement London and Keyboard Repair London. If you look closer at your keyboard, though, you might start to wonder about the way the letters are laid out. Although you may now know instinctively where each letter is, there doesn’t seem to be much method to the way it is laid out. The Q-W-E-R-T-Y keyboard, in fact, has a curious history.

Christopher Sholes was a Winsonsin-senator-cum-newspaper-editor who sought to invent a keyboard which would become a standard for all in the late 19th century.

Sholes first attempted an alphabetically laid-out keyboard, but found that the typebars clashed as a result of the arrangements of his keys. In reaching a standard that he felt worked best, Sholes had to consider frequency and combinations of letters too.

However it is alleged that Sholes` eventual model – the Q-W-E-R-T-Y arrangement – was deliberately hamstrung so as to slow down keyboards in typing competitions, protecting typewriters from damage.
