Virgin broadband speed to double
Virgin Media's broadband speed is set to double for many users this year, according to the company.
An upgrade beginning next month will boost speeds for over four million customers, rising from a maximum of 100Mbps to 120Mbps.
Virgin will complete the full roll-out of the scheme by the midpoint of next year, by which time it will have cost £110m to implement.
Prime Minister David Cameron described the investment as a "great boost for the economy" and said it promised to "change the way households, consumers and businesses use the internet."
"Rolling out superfast broadband across the country is a critical part of our plan to upgrade the UK's infrastructure and build a new and smarter economy."
Virgin Media's chief executive Neil Berkett said: "The internet has become an integral part of our social, work and family lives, so we think our customers are going to love this.
Mr Cameron's government has previously set targets to improve the UK's broadband speeds considerably over the next three years.
